Frequently asked questions
What is Bakemoji?
A reading app for Android and iPhone that teaches Japanese through books. You read in a language you know, and Bakemoji replaces some words with Japanese at your level, explains each one on tap and checks you after every chapter.
Do I need to know any Japanese to start?
No. Beginners start at the kana level: Bakemoji shows hiragana and katakana inside the text and has a card and a progress table for every sign. When kana feel easy, switch to JLPT N5.
Which levels does it cover?
Kana, JLPT N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1, and the business vocabulary of the BJT Business Japanese Proficiency Test.
Which languages can the books be in?
English, Russian, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Korean. The interface is available in the same seven languages.
Can I read my own books?
Yes: EPUB and FB2 files without DRM. Books stay on your phone. Only the text of the chapter you convert is sent to our server to find words, and it is not stored.
Are there free books?
Yes. The built-in library has thousands of public-domain classics from Project Gutenberg and Wikisource. It shows only books that are in the public domain where you are.
How is a word chosen for replacement?
Bakemoji looks for words of your level and below, and an AI model checks each one in its sentence so the Japanese word means the same thing there. Nouns can come with their particle, like 火事について for «about the fire».
What is in a word card?
The reading in kana and rōmaji, the meaning in your language, JLPT level, the grammar form or particle, each kanji with meaning, readings, components, a memory story and stroke order, and audio.
What is ink?
One drop of ink turns one chapter into a chapter with Japanese, once and for good. New readers get a supply, and when you run low Bakemoji tops it up every day. Very short chapters are free.
Is Bakemoji free?
Yes, the app is free to download and use with daily ink. The optional Plus subscription gives unlimited ink, extra themes and no ads.
Does it work offline?
Chapters you have opened once — with words, cards and audio — read without a connection. Converting a new chapter needs the internet.
How do I move my progress to a new phone?
Sign in with Google (Android) or Apple (iPhone) on the Progress screen. Your streak, words, kana, ink and unlocked chapters move with your account.
Is it good for the JLPT?
It builds the vocabulary and kanji recognition the JLPT tests, level by level, and the chapter exams train recall. For listening and grammar sections, combine it with practice tests.
A word or explanation is wrong. What do I do?
Tap the word, then «error» on its card. The explanation is regenerated for every reader.
